About

The Rutzke Family has a rich history and passion for growing plants in South Florida. It all started in 1907 when Herman Rutzke (Barney Sr.’s grandfather) and his son Frederick Rutzke (Barney Sr.’s father) moved to Miami-Dade County and began growing tomatoes and oranges. Since that time, the family business has seen over 4 generations of farmers in the fields and a multitude of vegetables and tropical fruit produced, harvested and sold to local, regional and national markets. At one point, the Rutzke’s were one of the largest vegetable producers in the South Florida area with every member of the family growing up knowing the meaning of a hard day’s work!

In 2001, the family decided to launch a new business, thus Railroad Nursery was founded. The father and son duo, Barney Rutzke, Sr. and Barney Rutzke, Jr., have over 100 years of agricultural growing history in South Florida to pull from. When they started the nursery over a decade ago, they never expected the 50 acres they had in production to grow into currently over 200 acres. Because of their investment in Agriculture, the family has fallow land available for future expansion.
